Nature's Soil, In Black and White

Millions of years ago, plants including trees and some fungi species created a symbiotic relationship that to this day can still be seen in all forests and natural ecosystems.  Who are these ecosystem transformers? Food webs are cycles that control everything on our planet.  But it is all started on a local level, in the soil.  Nutrients are provided in a similar cycle and it is this cycle that we break when we go through urbanization.  Nutrients are provided by decomposing materials (all plant parts, even logs), it is this energy cycle that will continue for millions of years. 

When we build on healthy soil, it changes.  Organics (a part of the web) are stripped away and mineral soils are heavily compacted, destroying the food web that was once there.  When we put 3 inches of topsoil back and install a lawn, it is added nutrients that keep it growing until more is added.  A different cycle is created, remove nutrients by throwing away debris and then add them by using chemical fertilizers.
