Root systems need to support the tree and allow for uptake of nutrients and water. If planted incorrectly, your tree can decline regardless of the water and fertilizers you provide.
Look below for more information and to learn how to identify these problems.
Girdling roots and objects pressing against the stem will reduce the amount of nutrients and water reaching the top of the tree. This leads to stunted growth and dieback. Commonly, 3-5 years after planting we start seeing the signs of a buried root flare or girdling roots. This service is about correcting issues that could have been mitigated when the tree was planted.
Ensure the tree’s base is not resembling a ‘pole in the ground.’ The critical anchoring roots should be visible and not buried more than 4 inches deep, positioned at least 4 inches from the trunk for optimal stability and health.
If the root flare isn’t visible, careful excavation may be necessary. This task should be performed with precision to avoid harming the tree, despite the challenge and meticulous effort required.
The area around the stem should be free of any roots or foreign materials. This encompasses removing any nylon ties or baskets that may have been used during the initial planting.
We provide thorough inspections and specialized pruning services to address issues like girdling roots or planting errors. It’s important to note that root pruning should only be conducted by those with the appropriate training to ensure the tree’s well-being
Trees affected by girdling roots can experience dieback or inhibited growth. Addressing this issue is crucial for tree health. Our range of services includes solutions that complement root inspections to prevent such problems.
Conducting inspections a few years post-treatment guarantees ongoing improvement and allows for timely interventions if additional adjustments are necessary.
Here is a case where a declining tree was saved by inspecting and pruning a root system after unburying the root flare. We saved this client 5 years of growing time from a replacement and over $300.
